We’re Hiring: Communications & Education Specialist

MetroEast Community Media is seeking a full-time Communications & Education Specialist to join our team at our Gresham, Oregon facility. As MetroEast’s Communications & Education Specialist, you will collaborate with the Leadership team and staff to develop and implement communications strategies that promote MetroEast’s education, digital equity, media production, and membership programs, as well as their equity and inclusion work. You will participate on the Education Team, teaching classes in media production and creation to youth and adults, as well as digital inclusion classes with immigrants and refugees.


Your creativity, organizational skills, and vision will assist our organization in amplifying visibility and promoting growth. This role directly supports the Director of Volunteers & Education and the Director of Digital Equity & Inclusion.

Classification: Full-time, non-exempt

Primary Responsibilities

Marketing 50%

  • Maintain a consistent brand and voice in all of MetroEast’s communications
  • Manage and support the creation of print and electronic materials, including:
    • Monthly email newsletter
    • Grow MetroEast’s social media marketing including program updates, action alerts, and other wins solicitation materials as needed
    • Develop and distribute event announcements, invitations, programs, signage, and brochures
  • Manage website updates and changes with support from IT team
  • With Leadership Team, coordinate and manage communications projects (e.g. editorial calendar, campaigns, Google AdWords, branding initiatives, etc.), including setting timelines, assigning roles, facilitating meetings, and liaising with external service providers as needed
  • Measure and report on the effectiveness of communications activities, engagement levels, and campaign progress
  • Work with the Production Team to market production team services and optimize viewership of videos produced by MetroEast. 
  • Develop distribution strategies for digital video content produced by MetroEast
  • Serve as an Access advocate, ensuring that all MetroEast communications are inclusive and equitable
  • Assist with other internal and external communications as needed, such as negotiating quotes and agreements with vendors and delivering on event brief objectives

Education Responsibilities: 50%

Instruct youth and adults according to set curriculum on video production techniques, operating video and computer equipment, communication, communications skills, media literacy, social media, and program distribution. 

  • Act as a trainer/mentor to youth and adults enrolled in camps and classes 
  • Instruct immigrants and refugees on basic usage of computers and other digital devices
  • Analyze course effectiveness and strategize improvements in conjunction with the Director of Volunteer Services & Education and Director of Digital Equity & Inclusion
  • Develop curricula to meet the needs of coursework and attendees 

Other Responsibilities:   

  • Actively participate in team meetings and discussions

  • Excellent PC and Mac skills, including Google docs/drive, Adobe products, social media aggregators (HootSuite, etc.), Final Cut Pro
  • Teaching experience
  • Media creation experience that could include: podcasting, video, photography, video game creation

Hours: 40 hours per week, may include some evenings or weekends

Education & Work Experience:    2-year degree or 2-5 years experience in marketing or equivalent combination of education and work experience.  Experience training youth and adults in a classroom setting is preferred.  

Working Conditions/Physical Demands:  Work is usually performed in an indoor office environment with long periods standing or at a desk. Work may be conducted outdoors and employee may be exposed to inclement weather.  Environment is oriented to public service and subject to constant work interruptions. Employees may work under the stress of continual public and/or inter-departmental contact and pressure to meet deadlines. The employee must be able to move about the facility to communicate with staff members.  Must frequently lift and/or move 25 to 50 pounds.  Current driver’s license required.  Requires flexible work schedule and may be required to work evenings and weekends. There is exposure to electricity/equipment.
