Welcome to Rockwood DIY Computer Class – Cycle Eight!

Congratulations to our most recent participants for finishing the eighth cycle of Welcome to Computer Class (previously known as Intro to Computers)! Building on the successes of seven previous workshops, Rockwood DIY has now served over 120 residents. Each participant completing Welcome to Computers with a better knowledge and understanding of internet navigation and basic 21st century skills.

Welcome to Computers participants receive six classes of digital literacy training including privacy and security, email management, social media, accessing resources offered by Multnomah County Library. Upon completion participants receive a laptop and one year of technical support from FreeGeek.

Rockwood DIY adapts workshops to participant comfort levels and students find most relevant. This cycle we had a skilled group and took the opportunity to add more content. Many of cycle eight participants are students, interested in learning collaborative tools that google docs offers. We incorporated Google Hangout, chats, editing live group documents and allotted more time to improve typing skills. We continued our partnership with FoodHero (Oregon State University sponsored program that provides affordable, healthy recipes and resources) and added an online banking class in partnership with Financial Beginnings of Oregon and Unitus Credit Union.

We couldn’t have done with without help from our volunteers, translators, partners and students so THANK YOU ALL for the support! If you’re interested in volunteering, or want more information on classes, contact jessica@metroeast.org or call 503-616-7639

Next Welcome to Computers begins January 22, 2019.
